Arsenal Identify £30m Raya Replacement as Real Madrid Transfer Links Grow

Arsenal have already looked at a potential replacement for David Raya, should the Spanish goalkeeper eventually leave the Emirates amid reported interest from Real Madrid.

According to Football London on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki is one of the players Arsenal have previously considered as a possible successor to Raya.

Raya’s arrival at Arsenal was initially met with plenty of questions. Mikel Arteta’s decision to replace Aaron Ramsdale with the Spain international put the goalkeeper under significant pressure, particularly during the early stages of his Arsenal career.

However, Raya has since answered his critics with his performances. The former Brentford goalkeeper has established himself as Arteta’s first-choice option and has won the Premier League Golden Glove in each of the last three seasons.

Arsenal remain happy with Raya and still regard him as an important part of their plans. However, the club have also been looking ahead in case the goalkeeper decides that his future lies elsewhere.

CBS Sports journalist James Benge previously revealed that Arsenal had monitored Suzuki while he was at Parma. The Japanese goalkeeper eventually moved to Aston Villa during the summer in a deal reportedly worth around £30 million.

At the time, Arsenal’s interest was partly connected to the possibility of Raya attracting attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain were all mentioned as potential destinations for the goalkeeper.

That situation led Arsenal to consider Suzuki as one of the options who could potentially step into Raya’s position if he eventually leaves the club.

Suzuki has also made a strong start to life at Aston Villa. Manager Unai Emery has spoken positively about the goalkeeper since his arrival, including after his debut against Arsenal.

Although Villa conceded in that match, Emery was impressed with Suzuki’s performance. The goalkeeper followed that up with another solid display against Hull City, helping Villa keep a clean sheet.

Emery has particularly praised Suzuki’s ability with the ball at his feet, his passing, confidence during build-up play and his handling of crosses and set pieces.

Those qualities are similar to the attributes Arsenal value in Raya, which helps explain why Suzuki had previously emerged on their radar.

For now, Raya remains Arsenal’s No. 1. But with interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, the Gunners appear to have already identified a potential £30 million replacement should their goalkeeper eventually decide to move on.
