Manchester United legend Patrice Evra has offered a humorous take on the club’s current situation, admitting that he is struggling to understand the constant debate surrounding the team’s players and managers.
United supporters have had plenty to discuss in recent months, with different players being praised when they are out of the starting XI and then criticised when they finally get their opportunity.
According to Evra, the situation has become so confusing that Manchester United fans now seem to miss almost every player the moment someone else takes their place.
Speaking about the team, Evra joked that starting Diogo Dalot at right-back quickly makes supporters remember what they liked about Noussair Mazraoui.
However, when Mazraoui gets the opportunity, the same supporters suddenly start asking why Dalot is not playing.
The former United defender believes the same pattern is happening on the left side of the defence.
When Luke Shaw starts, fans begin to miss Patrick Dorgu. But when Dorgu is given a chance, a short spell on the pitch can be enough for supporters to start wondering why Shaw was left out.
The situation is not limited to the defence either.
Evra pointed to the ongoing debate over Manchester United’s attacking options, particularly the choice between Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško.
When Cunha is used as a false nine, there are complaints that United need a natural striker like Šeško.
But when Šeško starts, the conversation can quickly change, with supporters questioning his involvement and wondering why Cunha is not playing in his preferred attacking role.
For Evra, that contradiction sums up the frustration surrounding the club.
And then there is the managerial situation.
The former France international joked that even managers are not immune from the same cycle. A manager can be blamed for the team’s problems, only for supporters to start missing the previous manager after a change fails to immediately solve everything.
Evra’s conclusion was simple and, perhaps, painfully familiar to Manchester United supporters.
“At this point, I think we just miss whoever isn’t playing.”
It is a feeling that has become increasingly common among football fans. When a player is on the bench, his strengths are often remembered more than his weaknesses. Once he gets his opportunity, however, his weaknesses suddenly become the main talking point.
That is exactly the cycle Evra was highlighting.
For Manchester United, the challenge is not simply deciding which player should start. It is finding enough consistency for supporters to stop believing that the answer is always sitting on the bench.
And as Evra’s comments suggest, the grass can sometimes look greener simply because the player standing on it is not currently playing.
