Liverpool could reportedly face interest in Florian Wirtz during the January transfer window, with Bayern Munich said to be considering a move for the Germany international.
Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen last summer in a deal reportedly worth around £116 million. However, his time at Anfield has not gone according to plan so far, with the 23-year-old struggling to produce the kind of numbers expected from such an expensive signing.
The midfielder has scored just seven goals in 54 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool and has come under increasing criticism as questions continue to be raised about his confidence and form.
According to reports from Germany, Bayern Munich are monitoring Wirtz’s situation closely and could explore the possibility of bringing him back to the Bundesliga in January.
However, any potential move could depend heavily on Liverpool’s stance. The Reds are not believed to be interested in allowing Wirtz to leave in the middle of the season, particularly with the club still backing the player to turn things around.
Andoni Iraola has also defended Wirtz amid the criticism surrounding his performances, insisting that goals and assists are not the only way to judge a player’s contribution.
“I am not too focused about numbers.
“Nowadays everything is about numbers, everyone tells players you have to assist, score goals. For me, you have to help us play well.”
Iraola’s comments suggest that Wirtz continues to have the support of those around him, despite the pressure that has followed his big-money move.
Liverpool are therefore expected to reject any approaches for the midfielder in January, with the club reportedly not prepared to listen to offers until at least the summer.
