Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has urged his teammates to remain focused and keep working hard after the Reds secured a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth on Sunday.
Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the match in the second half, helping Liverpool maintain their unbeaten start to the season at a difficult Vitality Stadium.
Despite the positive result, Van Dijk believes the team must remain grounded and avoid getting carried away with their early-season form.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the Liverpool skipper said:
“Hopefully [this team can be] very good, but let’s all stay calm and keep working and don’t get ahead of ourselves.”
Van Dijk acknowledged that Bournemouth made life difficult for Liverpool, pointing out the challenging conditions and the need to win individual battles.
“This was an important win at a difficult ground. They obviously make it very uncomfortable for you. At times we could have done a lot better, but we come away with three points and a clean sheet.”
The Dutch defender also praised his young defensive partner, encouraging him to continue developing without unnecessary pressure.
“He had a very good game, very good season so far, and keep it going,” Van Dijk said.
Isak’s goal adds to an impressive start for the striker, who has now scored four goals in five Premier League appearances this season. Van Dijk highlighted the importance of the team’s attacking players contributing on the scoresheet, while also giving credit to Florian Wirtz for his role in the goal.
With the international break now underway, Van Dijk called on the players to take care of themselves before returning for what promises to be a demanding period of the season.
“Good win here, clean sheet. Go to the international break now and then we are going to be bracing ourselves for a very, very intense period.”
