Arsenal could have a decision to make over the future of teenage sensation Max Dowman when the January transfer window opens.
According to a report by Football Transfer on Sunday, September 20, 2026, Rangers have been encouraged to consider making a loan move for the 16-year-old after Mikel Arteta admitted that Arsenal could look at a temporary exit if it is considered the right move for his development.
Dowman has attracted plenty of attention since breaking into Arsenal’s first-team setup, with several clubs reportedly keeping an eye on his situation ahead of the January window.
While Arsenal are keen to continue his development within the senior squad, Arteta has made it clear that the club will regularly assess what is best for the youngster.
The Arsenal boss explained before the club’s defeat to Brighton that Dowman’s situation would be reviewed every six months. His playing time, the competition for places, opportunities available to him and his overall development will all be taken into consideration before Arsenal make any decision.
Arteta also pointed out that Arsenal had previously turned down opportunities involving Dowman because the club wanted him to remain around the first team. His involvement during pre-season and the experience of training and playing alongside senior players were considered important for his development.
However, Rangers legend Ally McCoist believes the Scottish club should be ready to make a move if Arsenal decide that a loan spell would benefit Dowman.
McCoist said he would be delighted to see the teenager arrive at Ibrox and believes regular competitive football could help him continue developing.
The former Rangers striker also referred to Phil Foden’s development at Manchester City, pointing out that there is no single route that works for every young player. Although Pep Guardiola was able to keep Foden at City and gradually introduce him into the first team, McCoist believes a loan move can also be useful for certain youngsters.
Dowman has already made 15 senior appearances for Arsenal and has scored three goals during that time.
His estimated transfer value is currently around €7.5 million, putting him among the most highly valued 16-year-olds in world football. Only a small number of players, including Metz prospect Believe Munongo, are reportedly valued higher.
With January approaching, Arsenal will have to decide whether continued first-team exposure at the Emirates is the best option for Dowman or whether regular football elsewhere could accelerate his development.
