Virgil van Dijk could reportedly be heading for a new chapter in his career, with Barcelona emerging as a possible destination for the Liverpool captain in 2027.

According to a report from El Nacional, Van Dijk has made his interest in playing in La Liga known and could be available as a free agent when his current Liverpool contract expires on June 30, 2027.

Van Dijk Open to Barcelona Move

The Dutch defender has spent years establishing himself as one of Liverpool’s most important players and leaders. A move to Barcelona would represent a completely different challenge for the experienced centre-back, who could potentially arrive without a transfer fee if his contract expires as reported.

Barcelona are understood to be looking at options for the centre of their defence, making Van Dijk an interesting name because of his experience at the highest level.

However, the report suggests that the possibility has not convinced Barcelona manager Hansi Flick.

Flick Prefers a Younger Defender

Flick is reportedly more interested in bringing in a younger centre-back who can become part of Barcelona’s long-term defensive plans.

The report names players including Alessandro Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck among the younger options Barcelona could consider. Flick is also said to be more comfortable with the idea of signing Aymeric Laporte if the club decides to pursue an experienced defender.

The concern surrounding Van Dijk is understood to be largely connected to his age and the impact his arrival could have on the development of younger defenders within the squad.
