Manchester City could be facing one of the biggest punishments in Premier League history if their appeal against the latest verdict fails.
City were found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules on 114 occasions, according to a 40-page report released by the league’s officials. The findings relate to the period between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.
The commission found that City had overstated revenue and reduced costs by more than £900 million during that period. The club was given until Friday to appeal the verdict and has already confirmed that it intends to challenge the decision.
One of the possible punishments being discussed is expulsion from the Premier League.
However, removing City from the top flight would require a special vote involving the league’s shareholders. At least 15 of the other Premier League clubs would need to vote in favour of expulsion.
According to The Independent, there is already a growing feeling among rival clubs that such a vote could receive significant support if City’s appeal fails.
The commission’s report contains serious findings, including allegations that City used what it described as “sham” contracts involving some commercial partners and provided inaccurate financial information.
The report also claimed that some witnesses gave evidence they knew to be untrue.
Despite the findings, Manchester City continue to strongly deny the allegations and insist they have evidence capable of proving their position.
In a statement following the publication of the verdict, the club said it was “disappointed and surprised” by the commission’s decision.
City maintained that they were innocent of the accusations and claimed they had a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” supporting their case.
The club also confirmed that it would continue pursuing every available appeal and legal avenue.
With the appeal process still to come, the situation is far from over. But if the verdict ultimately stands, Manchester City could find themselves facing an unprecedented decision over their future in the Premier League.
