Xabi Alonso Sees Reece James’ Primary Position as Midfield

Reece James could be set for a major change in his role if Xabi Alonso gets his way.

According to Ben Jacobs, Alonso views the Chelsea captain’s primary position as midfield, rather than seeing him mainly as a right-back.

James has spent most of his career operating from the right side of defence, where his technical ability, crossing, strength and ability to contribute in the final third have made him one of Chelsea’s most important players when fit.

However, Alonso is believed to see qualities in James that could make him even more effective in the middle of the pitch.

The England international is comfortable in possession and has the passing range to help control games. He is also physically strong, can carry the ball forward and is capable of contributing defensively.

Those qualities could make a move into midfield an interesting option, particularly in a system where full-backs or defenders are expected to step into central areas during possession.

For Alonso, James’ versatility could therefore become a major asset. Rather than being restricted to the right flank, the 26-year-old could potentially be used in a deeper midfield role where he would have more opportunities to influence the game.

It would certainly represent a significant tactical change for James, but Alonso has already shown during his coaching career that he is willing to use players in different positions depending on what his system requires.

The biggest question will be whether James himself is comfortable with such a change.

His injury history has also meant that Chelsea have had to manage his workload carefully, so any decision regarding his position would likely take his fitness and physical condition into consideration.

For now, the report simply highlights how Alonso views the player and the possibilities he sees in his game.

If the Spanish coach eventually gets the opportunity to work with James, fans could see a very different version of the Chelsea captain — one operating in midfield rather than from his familiar position at right-back.
