Atletico Madrid defender David Hancko has shown Manchester United plenty of respect ahead of their upcoming meeting, describing the Premier League giants as a team with quality, physical strength and the ability to cause serious problems for their opponents.
Hancko made it clear that Atletico Madrid will need to be at their best if they want to come away with a positive result against United.
Speaking about the challenge, the Atletico defender acknowledged the quality within the Manchester United squad, insisting that his team cannot afford to underestimate their opponents.
“They have great players and, of course, they’re a giant. We’ll have to give 100% to win,” Hancko said.
His comments reflect the level of respect Manchester United still command, regardless of the challenges they have faced in recent seasons.
Hancko Explains Why Manchester United Will Be Different This Time
Hancko also referred to the previous meeting between the two sides during pre-season, when Manchester United came out on top.
However, the Atletico Madrid defender believes the upcoming encounter will be a different challenge, pointing out that United were missing several players during that earlier game.
“We faced them in the pre-season, we lost that match, but they were still missing a lot of players, so this will be a different game,” he explained.
That is an important point for Atletico Madrid. Pre-season matches can offer useful preparation, but they do not always tell the full story of what to expect in a competitive fixture.
With both teams likely to approach the game with greater intensity, the contest could be much more demanding than their previous meeting.
Manchester United will also be keen to show that they can compete against top European opposition, while Atletico will be determined to avoid repeating the mistakes that cost them in pre-season.
Atletico Madrid Wary of United’s Physical Strength
One of the most interesting parts of Hancko’s assessment was his recognition of Manchester United’s physical qualities.
The defender highlighted United’s ability to compete in duels, their strength and their pace, warning that Atletico must remain focused throughout the match.
“They have quality and physicality, they’re strong in duels and have the ability to run. We have to be very focused,” he added.
This suggests Atletico Madrid are well aware of the problems United can create when they play with intensity and use their physical advantages effectively.
Winning individual battles could be particularly important, especially in midfield, where both teams will look to gain control of the game. United’s ability to press, recover possession and move quickly into attacking positions could put Atletico under pressure if they fail to maintain their concentration.
At the same time, Atletico Madrid are known for their competitive approach and tactical discipline. They will look to use those qualities to limit United’s opportunities and exploit any weaknesses.
Manchester United Have a Point to Prove
For Manchester United, comments like these should serve as a reminder that opponents continue to recognise the club’s quality and stature.
However, respect alone will not win the match. United must turn their individual talent into a strong team performance and show that they can maintain their intensity against a well-organised Atletico Madrid side.
Hancko’s comments also make it clear that Atletico will not be approaching the game casually. They know United have the quality to punish mistakes, and they will need to be alert from the opening whistle.
With both sides having plenty to prove, the encounter promises to be an interesting test of quality, discipline and physical strength.
Can Manchester United beat Atletico Madrid again, or will Diego Simeone’s side get their revenge after losing to them in pre-season?
