Barcelona Explored Surprise Move for Josko Gvardiol

Barcelona reportedly explored the possibility of signing Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol towards the end of 2025 as Hansi Flick looked to strengthen his defensive options.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Croatian defender was one of the players who attracted serious attention from Barcelona. Flick reportedly viewed Gvardiol as a strong fit for his defensive plans because of his ability to operate both at centre-back and on the left side of defence.

However, Barcelona’s interest did not develop into a transfer because Gvardiol was not looking to leave Manchester City.

Gvardiol Was Not Interested in Leaving

The 24-year-old had established himself as an important part of Manchester City’s defence and was reportedly happy with his situation at the club.

That made Barcelona’s task difficult from the beginning. While the Catalan giants were exploring defensive reinforcements, Gvardiol had no immediate desire to make the move to Camp Nou.

Barcelona subsequently turned their attention towards other options as they continued their search for defensive reinforcements.

The club had been looking for a left-footed defender who could provide flexibility across the back line, and Gvardiol’s profile fitted that requirement particularly well. Mundo Deportivo had previously identified him alongside Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni as one of the defenders Barcelona admired most.

Manchester City Kept Gvardiol

Gvardiol’s decision to remain at City was eventually followed by a major commitment to the Premier League club.

The Croatian signed a new contract that will keep him at Manchester City until 2031, effectively putting an end to any immediate possibility of a move to Barcelona.

For City, retaining Gvardiol represents a continuation of their plans around a defender who has become an important part of the squad. For Barcelona, meanwhile, the situation meant looking elsewhere for the defensive profile Flick wanted.

Barcelona’s Search Continues

The Gvardiol situation shows just how difficult the transfer market can be when a target has no desire to leave his current club.

Barcelona may have admired the Croatian defender, but interest from a major European club was not enough to change his plans. With his future now tied to Manchester City until 2031, any potential move would require a significant change in circumstances.

For now, Gvardiol remains a Manchester City player, while Barcelona continue to assess other defensive options for the future.
