Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has reportedly called for Matheus Cunha to return to the left wing for the upcoming clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
Cunha has already shown how effective he can be from the left side, and there is a growing feeling that United should stick with what worked well for them last season rather than continue changing the Brazilian’s position.
Speaking about the situation, Carrick reportedly questioned the need to alter a setup that had previously worked, with Cunha playing a key role from the left.
“Matheus Cunha needs to START on the left-wing against Tottenham and going forward. We had the left-wing sorted last season with Cunha — so why change something that was working?”
The Brazilian has become an important attacking option for United, particularly because of his ability to carry the ball, create chances and cause problems for defenders from the left.
With Tottenham next on the schedule, attention will now turn to Carrick’s team selection and whether Cunha gets the opportunity to operate in his preferred position.
United supporters will certainly be hoping to see the Brazilian back on the left, where he can provide the pace, creativity and attacking threat that made him such an important player for the team.
For Carrick, the argument appears simple: if Cunha and the left side were working effectively last season, there may be little reason to fix something that was never broken.
