Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has responded to Matheus Cunha’s comments about the team’s performance following their Premier League draw with Fulham.
Cunha had admitted after the match that Fulham appeared to have more energy during the second half, something he felt Manchester United needed to improve.
However, Carrick offered a different assessment when asked about the Brazilian forward’s comments.
What Cunha Said
Cunha acknowledged that Manchester United struggled to match Fulham’s intensity after the interval.
The Brazilian, who played an important role in United getting back into the game, suggested that the team needed to show more energy and intensity during matches.
His comments reflected his frustration at United dropping points despite eventually finding an equaliser.
Carrick Gives His Response
Carrick did not completely agree with Cunha’s assessment.
The Manchester United manager pointed towards the way his players reacted after Fulham took the lead, arguing that the team continued to push for an equaliser rather than allowing the setback to affect them.
United eventually got their reward late in the game when Cunha found the net, with his effort taking a deflection before ending up in the back of the net.
Cunha Rescues a Point
Cunha once again proved his importance to Manchester United by producing the moment that helped the team avoid another defeat.
His late goal gave United a share of the points and ended what had been a frustrating afternoon for Carrick’s side.
Although the result was not what United wanted, Carrick was encouraged by the team’s response after falling behind.
No Problem Between Carrick and Cunha
Despite the difference in their assessments, Carrick’s response did not suggest that there is any serious disagreement between himself and Cunha.
The two were simply offering different views of United’s performance.
Cunha focused on the lack of energy he felt the team showed at certain stages, while Carrick highlighted the determination his players showed in their attempts to get back into the match.
For United, the bigger concern will be turning those late responses into more consistent performances and results in the matches ahead.
