David de Gea has once again joined the conversation surrounding Manchester City after the Premier League’s latest ruling against the club.
The former Manchester United goalkeeper had already caused a stir on social media a few days ago when he posted: “So let’s talk, how many Premier League titles have I won?”
The comment was made in reference to Manchester City’s financial case and the possibility that the outcome could eventually have an impact on titles won during the period covered by the charges.
The Premier League has now confirmed that an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of serious financial rule breaches covering nine seasons between 2009/10 and 2017/18. The league said the commission found that the club had used arrangements that artificially inflated revenue and reduced costs by more than £900 million. City have denied wrongdoing and have the right to appeal the findings.
De Gea has a reason to ask the question
De Gea was Manchester United’s goalkeeper during the period in question and was part of the team that won the Premier League title in 2012/13.
United finished runners-up to City in the 2011/12 and 2017/18 seasons, meaning any future decision affecting City’s historical titles could potentially reopen discussions about those campaigns.
However, no titles have been reassigned at this stage. The Premier League has said that the sanction against City is still to be determined, with possible sporting sanctions to be considered separately.
That has not stopped former United players and supporters from having some fun with the situation.
De Gea’s original post quickly went viral among Manchester United fans, while former teammate Rio Ferdinand also made a similar comment about potentially adding another Premier League medal to his collection.
City still have the right to appeal
Despite the commission’s findings, the matter is far from completely settled.
Manchester City have strongly rejected the accusations and said they intend to use the available appeal process. The Premier League has given the club until October 2, 2026, to appeal the commission’s findings.
For now, De Gea’s question remains just that — a question.
But with the sanction and possible appeal still to come, the former United goalkeeper’s latest reaction has added another interesting chapter to one of the biggest stories in Premier League history.
