Arsenal could be back in the market for another major attacking signing when the January transfer window opens, with David Ornstein providing an intriguing update on the club’s financial ability to make a big move.
The Gunners spent more than €220 million during the summer transfer window as Mikel Arteta continued to strengthen his squad. However, their attacking options were not overhauled as heavily as some supporters expected.
Christos Tzolis was the only forward brought in, while Arsenal were linked with two of Europe’s biggest attacking names, Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez.
Both players were reportedly valued at around €100 million, but neither deal materialised. Despite that, Ornstein has indicated that Arsenal’s owners were willing to provide the money required if the right circumstances had fallen into place.
Speaking to The Athletic, Ornstein said Arsenal had been prepared to pursue Vinicius Junior, Julian Alvarez and Morgan Rogers if the players had been interested in moving to the Emirates and the clubs could have reached an agreement over the transfer fees.
That revelation highlights the level of financial backing available to Arsenal when the club identifies a player it believes can make a significant difference.
Arsenal also have an increasingly attractive proposition for elite players. They are the reigning Premier League champions and reached the Champions League final last season, giving the club another reason for top-level players to consider a move to north London.
However, Ornstein made it clear that Arsenal having the financial capability to make a major signing does not necessarily mean they will do so.
Gyokeres Future Could Become Part of the Conversation
Viktor Gyokeres could also become an important part of the discussion surrounding Arsenal’s attack.
The Swedish striker enjoyed a productive first season at the Emirates, scoring 21 goals, but his involvement has been more limited at the beginning of the new campaign.
His performance in Tuesday’s 4-2 Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich also attracted criticism, with the striker failing to make the impact expected of him.
That does not mean Arsenal are actively looking to replace Gyokeres, but continued questions over his role could add another layer to the club’s thinking if an exceptional attacking opportunity becomes available.
Arsenal Face Financial Considerations
There is also an important financial factor Arsenal will have to consider before making another major investment.
Ornstein suggested that the club is operating relatively close to UEFA’s financial regulations, meaning Arsenal would need to carefully assess their position before committing to another expensive transfer.
That could make a January blockbuster difficult unless the right circumstances arise.
Arsenal have traditionally been cautious in the January market, preferring to do most of their major business during the summer. But that approach could change if an elite attacking player suddenly becomes available.
For now, there is no confirmation that Arsenal have agreed a deal or even identified a specific January target.
What Ornstein’s comments do suggest, however, is that Arsenal’s owners have demonstrated a willingness to back Arteta financially when the right player becomes available.
The big question now is whether that opportunity arrives in January — or whether Arsenal wait until next summer to make their next major attacking investment.
