Manchester United are reportedly keeping a close eye on Benfica defender Tomás Araújo as they continue to assess their defensive options ahead of a potential transfer move.
According to TEAMtalk, the Red Devils are monitoring a deal for the 24-year-old, who has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs. However, Manchester United are believed to be among the clubs showing the strongest interest in signing the Portuguese defender.
Araújo has impressed with his performances for Benfica, establishing himself as a versatile defensive option. The Portuguese international is capable of playing both as a centre-back and a right-back, a quality that could make him an attractive addition to United’s squad.
Manchester United have been linked with several defenders as they look to strengthen their backline, and Araújo’s versatility could provide the club with more options at the back. His ability to operate in different defensive positions would also offer greater flexibility in managing the squad throughout a demanding season.
However, securing his signature could prove difficult for the Premier League side. Araújo recently signed a contract extension with Benfica that runs until 2030, with a reported release clause of around £68 million.
The new contract puts Benfica in a strong negotiating position, meaning Manchester United may have to meet his release clause or negotiate a substantial transfer fee if they decide to make a formal approach.
With several Premier League clubs also reportedly monitoring the defender, United could face competition for his signature should they step up their interest.
For now, Manchester United’s interest remains at the monitoring stage, and no official bid has been confirmed. Nevertheless, Araújo is a name to watch as the club continues to explore potential defensive reinforcements.
