Thomas Tuchel has made some major changes to his England squad following the disappointment of the 2026 World Cup, with several Arsenal and Chelsea players missing from his latest selection.
According to a report by Metro on Friday, September 18, 2026, Tuchel has recalled Trent Alexander-Arnold for England’s upcoming Nations League fixtures, while Chelsea captain Reece James and Arsenal winger Noni Madueke have been left out.
James had been an important player for Tuchel since the German took charge of the national team, but he has now missed out on the latest squad. Alexander-Arnold, on the other hand, has been given another opportunity despite making only a limited number of appearances for England under Tuchel.
Madueke is another notable omission from the squad, while Chelsea star Cole Palmer has returned after making a strong start to the new season.
Palmer’s return will attract plenty of attention, especially after he was controversially left out of England’s World Cup squad. The Chelsea midfielder will now have another chance to prove himself under Tuchel.
There are also a number of less experienced players in the squad. Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite and Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha have all been called up.
Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly and Lewis Hall have also been given another opportunity after missing out on the World Cup squad.
Meanwhile, Arsenal’s Ezri Konsa, Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka remain part of the group as Tuchel keeps several familiar faces in his plans.
One of the biggest surprises is the absence of Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden. Adam Wharton and Morgan Gibbs-White have also failed to make the squad, while Ollie Watkins, Djed Spence and Harry Maguire are among the other notable names left out.
Injuries have also played a role in some of the omissions. Jordan Henderson, John Stones, Dean Henderson, Dan Burn and Arsenal defender Ben White are all expected to remain unavailable until after the international break.
England will begin their Nations League campaign against Spain at Wembley on September 26 before facing the Czech Republic and Croatia during the extended September and October international period.
For Tuchel, the latest squad represents the beginning of a new chapter after the World Cup. His focus will now be on the Nations League while also preparing the team for Euro 2028.
The inclusion of established players such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Jordan Pickford shows that Tuchel is still relying on some of his experienced stars, even as he introduces fresh faces.
The upcoming international fixtures should give the selected players an opportunity to show Tuchel what they can offer as he continues to shape his England squad.
