Arteta Says Brighton Defeat Was a ‘Big Lesson’ for Arsenal

Mikel Arteta admitted Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton was a painful reminder that no Premier League game can be taken for granted.

The Gunners suffered their first defeat of the season at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, with Brighton producing an impressive performance from the opening whistle.

Arsenal struggled to deal with the hosts’ intensity and were repeatedly exposed at the back. Pascal Gross opened the scoring with a long-range effort before Charalampos Kostoulas added a second before half-time.

Brighton continued to cause problems after the break and made it 3-0 when Chema Andres rose highest to head home from a corner.

The result was particularly disappointing for Arsenal, who had started the season in excellent form and had won all seven of their previous matches in all competitions.

Speaking after the game, Arteta accepted that Brighton deserved the victory and admitted his side had fallen short in some of the basic areas required to win a Premier League match.

“Extremely disappointed. First of all, I think we have to congratulate Brighton for the victory. I think they deserve it,” Arteta said.

“I think they were the better team. From our side, there were certain basics that you need to accomplish in football, especially in the Premier League, that we were very far from.”

Arsenal had been widely tipped to challenge strongly for another Premier League title after ending their long wait to become champions of England last season.

However, Arteta believes the defeat should serve as a warning to his players, particularly with the international break now giving them time to reflect.

“It’s a big lesson for us. It is a reminder to some of the players of how tough every game is,” the Arsenal manager added.

Despite the disappointing result, Arteta was keen to recognise the impressive work his players had done during the opening weeks of the campaign.

He pointed out that the squad had returned from the World Cup with 18 players and had still managed to produce a strong run of results.

“That’s not going to take away what the team has done and what the boys have done in the last six or seven weeks since coming back from the World Cup,” Arteta said.

“With 18 players coming back, what we’ve done, the way we’ve competed and the amount of games we’ve won has been remarkable.

“But this is a big lesson for all of us to understand what it takes to win at this level.”

For Arsenal, the defeat will now provide Arteta and his players with an opportunity to regroup and address the problems exposed by Brighton before the Premier League action resumes.
