Jamie Carragher has raised eyebrows over a player who appeared to be heading for a big season after scoring a memorable hat-trick against Tottenham, only for his form and impact to seemingly disappear afterwards.
The former Liverpool defender questioned what happened to the Arsenal player following that impressive performance, pointing out that there has been very little noise around him since.
The hat-trick against Spurs immediately put the player in the spotlight. It looked like the kind of performance that could kick-start his season and give Arsenal supporters plenty to be excited about.
However, things have not continued at the same level.
Carragher’s comments have now sparked a debate among football fans, particularly those who believe certain players receive far more criticism when they play for clubs such as Manchester United.
The suggestion that a struggling player can go under the radar simply because he does not play for United has also added another layer to the discussion.
Manchester United players are regularly under intense scrutiny, with almost every poor performance generating headlines and debates across social media. Other players at rival clubs can sometimes receive considerably less attention when their form drops.
For Arsenal, the bigger question is whether the player can rediscover the form that produced that outstanding performance against Tottenham.
One big game can change the conversation around a player, but maintaining that level over an entire season is what ultimately matters.
Carragher’s comments have certainly brought the issue back into the spotlight, and Arsenal fans will be hoping the player can remind everyone why that Spurs performance created so much excitement in the first place.
