Chelsea could be looking at another midfield addition when the January transfer window opens, with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton reportedly among the players being considered.
Both midfielders have attracted attention for their ability on the ball, but there is one name that particularly stands out when looking at what Chelsea could need in the middle of the pitch.
That player is Alex Scott.
Chelsea have invested heavily in their squad in recent transfer windows, particularly in midfield, but there have still been moments when the team has lacked control in the centre of the pitch.
At times, Chelsea have looked capable of playing at a high tempo but have struggled to slow games down when necessary. Having a midfielder who can receive the ball under pressure, dictate the rhythm and keep possession moving could give the team another dimension.
Scott fits that profile.
The Bournemouth midfielder is comfortable operating in different midfield roles and has shown that he can contribute both with and without the ball. His technical ability allows him to play through pressure, while his understanding of space can help his team maintain possession and build attacks.
For Chelsea, that kind of profile could be particularly useful.
The club already have several midfielders capable of covering ground and playing with intensity. What could make Scott interesting is his ability to bring a different type of control to the midfield rather than simply adding another energetic player.
Adam Wharton is also a player who would make sense. The Crystal Palace midfielder has developed a reputation for his passing range, composure and ability to influence the game from deeper positions.
However, Scott could offer Chelsea something slightly different.
The 22-year-old has continued to develop at Bournemouth and has experience playing in the demanding environment of the Premier League. His versatility could also make him an attractive option for a Chelsea side that often needs players capable of adapting to different tactical situations.
Much would, of course, depend on Bournemouth’s willingness to negotiate.
Scott is under contract at the Vitality Stadium, meaning Chelsea would likely have to make a significant investment if they decide to pursue him. Bournemouth would also have little reason to make negotiations easy for a player who remains an important part of their squad.
Chelsea’s January plans could therefore depend on how the midfield performs during the first half of the season and whether the club decide that another addition is necessary.
But if the Blues are looking for someone capable of slowing the game down, controlling possession and giving the midfield a calmer presence, Alex Scott is certainly a name worth keeping an eye on.
The January window is still some way off, but Chelsea’s interest in midfield options could become one of the stories to watch as the season develops.
