Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has finally spoken about Manchester City’s financial charges, revealing that his respect for Pep Guardiola and the football played by his former rivals has influenced his reaction to the situation.
Manchester City have been found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against them over alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations between 2009 and 2018. The club has maintained its innocence and is expected to appeal the verdict, with potential sanctions yet to be determined.
Klopp, who enjoyed an intense rivalry with Guardiola during his time at Liverpool, was asked about the verdict and the possibility of the Premier League revisiting previous title outcomes.
The German coach had previously joked that he would organise a parade if Liverpool were awarded any of Manchester City’s titles following a potential punishment. However, his latest comments suggest that his position has changed.
“I haven’t given it much thought, even though I’ve seen it, of course. I also know what I said about it in the past and how if there’s ever a parade, I’ll be there, but it doesn’t feel like that anymore,” Klopp said.
The former Liverpool boss went on to explain that his admiration for Guardiola and the quality of football Manchester City produced during their rivalry made it difficult for him to comment further on the matter.
“My respect for Pep Guardiola and the football played at City during the time we played against each other, plus what an opponent they proved to be for us at the very highest level, is far too great for me to be able to say anything now,” he added.
Klopp also made it clear that he would rather wait for the legal process to run its course than speculate about the possible consequences for Manchester City.
The former Liverpool manager remains satisfied with what his team achieved during his time at Anfield, despite narrowly missing out on the Premier League title to Guardiola’s Manchester City on two occasions.
Liverpool finished just one point behind City in the 2018/19 and 2021/22 campaigns, with both seasons producing closely contested title races.
Despite the possibility of retrospective changes to the Premier League record books, Klopp insisted that he was comfortable with Liverpool’s achievements and had no need to celebrate additional titles through administrative decisions.
Manchester City’s case remains a major talking point in English football, with the club expected to challenge the findings. Any potential punishment will depend on the outcome of the ongoing legal process.
For Klopp, however, the focus remains on what happened on the pitch and the respect he developed for Guardiola during their years of competition.
His latest remarks have offered a different perspective on the situation, as the former Liverpool manager has chosen to wait for the final outcome rather than celebrate the possibility of being awarded additional honours.
