Manchester United are reportedly keeping a close eye on Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell as they consider a potential move for the defender when his contract expires next summer.
According to Football365 on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, United could look to take advantage of Mitchell’s contract situation and bring him to Old Trafford as a free agent in 2027.
United spent heavily on midfielders during the summer transfer window, bringing in Carlos Baleba from Brighton, Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.
However, strengthening other areas of the squad was also considered, with a new left-back among the positions United reportedly explored.
Lewis Hall was one of the players linked with a move to Old Trafford, but Newcastle ultimately managed to keep hold of the England international by handing him a new contract that runs until 2031.
With the left-back position still an area United could strengthen, Mitchell has now emerged as another potential option.
United Interested in Mitchell
Mitchell’s current contract with Crystal Palace is due to expire next summer, meaning he could become available on a free transfer if the two sides fail to agree a new deal.
Former Manchester United scout Mick Brown, who remains well connected at Old Trafford, claims the club would be very interested if Mitchell becomes a free agent.
Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said United would move quickly to sign the Palace defender if he becomes available.
According to Brown, there are not many left-backs in the Premier League who have shown the same level of consistency as Mitchell during his time at Palace.
He also claims United hold the defender in high regard and have been impressed by his performances at Selhurst Park.
While Mitchell’s defensive ability is one of his biggest strengths, Brown believes the 26-year-old has also made significant progress going forward.
Those qualities could make him an attractive option for United, particularly because the club are looking for consistency in the position.
Brown also pointed to the difficulties some players have experienced after arriving at Old Trafford, suggesting Mitchell’s long-term consistency at Palace could work in his favour.
Palace Face a Big Decision
Mitchell’s future will ultimately depend on whether he decides to extend his stay with Crystal Palace.
A new contract remains possible, but if the defender chooses to leave, he is likely to attract plenty of interest from other clubs.
For United, the possibility of signing an experienced Premier League left-back without paying a transfer fee could be particularly appealing.
However, competition for Mitchell’s signature could be intense if he reaches the final months of his Palace contract without agreeing a new deal.
